Homeowners Insurance

So a friend of mine just purchased a home. They are looking for homeowners insurance. Unfortunately, they are less than 1/2 mile from brush. This means that they will probably pay about $400-800 more a year for their homeowners insurance. This can be a big difference in their monthly payment. I encouraged them to shop it around. They have found that Topa Insurance and a company related to Ameriprise has been the cheapest so far.

Some of the reasons for higher rates on your homeowners insurance could be that you have your laundry room upstairs, you are close to brush, you aren't close enough to a fire hydrant, or you are in a flood zone. These things can negatively impact the price that you pay on your homeowners insurance.

As a word of advice, in southern California you cannot possibly build a house for less than $140 a square foot. So getting your house insured for the low price that you may have picked up your home for will only get you in trouble when it comes time to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss. Just be careful. Don't let your insurance agent under insure your house because in the end it will be you who is stuck with the bill.
